Are you finding yourself working at home on your kitchen table? Finding it hard to be productive without a dedicated home office space?
This article will help you carve out a stylish AND small home office – all at an affordable price with convenient online shopping. You will first learn how to find the perfect spot for your office, and how to make sure everything fits. Then, we’ll give you 9 small space desk and chair combos to make a highly efficient & modern office space to get your stuff done – like a boss!
First, find a good spot for your small home office
The first thing you need to figure out is where you can place your home office (if you, like me, don’t have a dedicated room to use as an office).
You need at least space for a small desk and a chair, at a minimum. A bonus would be room for a bookshelf for things like a printer, and room for a filing cabinet or storage would be ideal, if possible.
Some ideas for locations would be:
- A spare bedroom
- A finished basement
- In the kitchen or dining area
- In/near your living room
- In your bedroom or a kid’s bedroom
- A wide hallway or breezeway
We decided to set up our small home office in our guest bedroom. Our office area now shares a room with a little twin bed.
The desk is from Target – the Paulo Basic Desk from Project 62. See my full review of this desk here.
The ladder-style bookcase I cannot remember where we got it, but this one on Wayfair looks pretty similar. We are using a dining chair for now but getting the Sauder Harvey Park Occasional Chair in grey (listed below in Combo 1) to complete the look.
Next, measure up
Measuring is critical to determine how big or small of a desk you can fit, and also if you have room for a bookcase or filing cabinet. When buying furniture online, one of the biggest mistakes I made is not measuring my space, and not looking at the product specifications.
Measure twice and make sure whatever furniture you pick will fit in the space.
Check the Specs (Specifications)
Next, make sure to look at the product specifications page for all the measurements of the items you pick to make sure they fit in your designated space. Here’s 2 more helpful hints:
- Look at the specifications for each furniture piece you want to buy and try to figure out if they will work with each other size-wise.
- You also may want to measure doorways or stairs to make sure you can get the desk in/out of the room.

Amazing and useful ideas. Thank you for this!
Love this! Great recommendations. As my fiance works from home, we have had to rearrange the office space to accommodate both of us! Might be purchasing a couple of these pieces to add!
These are great tips! It’s definitely hard to find space for a dedicated office space in a small home, but still it’s manageable even if it’s just a corner space or infused with the living area or kitchen area.
Great ideas, I will set up my home office soon, because I definitely need one.
My friend texted me recently asking me about my home office furniture but I did not have any advice! I totally passed this along because she is trying to makeup a sweet and chic office since she’s teaching from home! Great information!
Thanks for sharing, much appreciated!
